Earth Friendly Abodes

This is a place for discussion on how we can each be more eco conscious and earth friendly at home. Besides the obvious things-like recycling, etc. What are some less than obvious ideas for doing your part for the planet at home?

Ok, here's another question, I live in Canada, lots of space here, should we open the doors to immigration for people who are going to suffer due to climate change or should we protect and preserve the green space. People or Bears?
Which do you choose?

Living in LA without air-conditioning has given me a certain peeve about A/C users here. Basically, know when to turn it off (i.e. when it's below 75 outside). Even when it's 100 degrees by day here, it always cools to the upper 60s / low 70s, no humidity. Awesome sleeping weather with windows open.

I am consciously trying to take shorter showers. Feels good, wreaks havoc and hell. Hope all is well.

I am teaching my three kids to turn off the water during teeth brushing. They'll walk to the other room and start playing a game all with the tooth brush still in their mouth ... and the water still running. Probably saving several gallons everyday now.

I'll start it off by throwing this out there.

I used to stand in front of the refrigerator with door open for minutes on end looking for something to eat. My soon-to-be-wife has implemented a 10 second rule on keeping the fridge door open to prevent wasting energy.
